In 1997,  the Reverend Father (M. L'abbé), Henry de L'ESPINAY (1923-2011) published a complete genealogy on the PICHON family. The Blog Administrator is deeply grateful to L'abbé de l'Espinay for his important contribution to keeping the memory alive of the Pichon family and their descendants.  We dedicate this Blog Entry to him.

The Coat of Arms of the PICHON

 

"Armes d'azur au chevron accompagné en deux molettes d'éperon le tout d'or et en pointe d' un croissant d' argent surmonté d'un agneau du même" ("Nobiliare universal....",344 [1816]).

It appears that at some point, " la couronne de marquis, en revanche nous donnerons les tenants comme étant un hippogriffe à dextre et un dragon à senestre" was added to the original arms dating from 1660. (from website "Blasons des armoires").


The grand coat of arms of Bernard de PICHON-LONGUEVILLE has two sides. The left side has the traditional arms of the PICHON and the right side is divided  between the arms of the BAVOLIER on top and arms of the d'AFFIS on the bottom.

Origins of the Family

The family origin is in Guienne (Guyenne), south west part of France in the region of Aquitaine.

The  "Archives généalogiques et historiques de la noblesse de France, ou ..., Volume 6" (1839) reports that  the Pichon family was related to  Guillaume de PICHON, Bishop of Saint-Briac (1229-1254). The Bishop was said to have performed miracles and died in the "odor of saintliness". However, the study of Henry de L'ESPINAY has not provided a direct genealogical link.

Richard de LESTONNAC married Jeanne EYQUEM de MONTAIGNE and issued Saint Jeanne de LESTONNAC (1556 - 1640).

Jeanne Eyquem de Montaigne  was the daughter of Pierre Eyquem de Montaigne (1554-1556) and Antoinette de Louppes. Thus, she was the sister of  Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592). Saint Jeanne  de Lestonnac was the nice of the famous french philosopher.

Married in 1519 Mathurine de GUERIN and he issued Bernard, Richard, Jacques, and Jeanne.

In 1577, Henri II, King of France and Navarre ennobled Richard de PICHON and on March 21, 1560 he married Peyronne de SABAROS and issued François de PICHON and others.

In 1602, he married Catherine de BAVOLIER (+1666) and issued Jacques, Bernard, Rene, Marguerite and others.

 François began construction on the Hôtel Pichon-Longueville in Bordeaux between 1610 and 1614.This residence was also known as the Cours de Chapeau Rouge.

Bernard de PICHON (1610-?), Cheavalier, Seigneur de Cariet, Baron de Longueville et de Parempuyre, Président au parlement de Bordeaux, et Conseiller du ROI

He was born in Bordeaux on June 18, 1610. He was president of the Bordeaux parliament and keeper of the keys of the city.

On August 18, 1659 he received His Majesty Louis XIV who was on his way to be married to the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain. Bernard was the executor of the Last Will and Testament of Her Majesty the Queen of Austria.

On August 19, 1638 he married Catherine de la LANNE and secondly he married Anne d'AFFIS de LONGUEVILLE on September 8, 1646.

From his first marriage he issued Finette de PICHON and others. From his second marriage he issued:

1.  François de Pichon , baron de Parempuyre (1647- ) 
2. Jacques François de Pichon , baron de Longueville 
3. Jacques de Pichon , baron de Longueville
4. Marie Anne de Pichon
5.  Olive de Pichon

Anne d'AFFIS de LONGUEVILLE was the only daughter of Baron de Longueville and thus heir to the Château de Longueville. Upon her marriage to Bernard de Pichon the title and property passed to the Pichon family.

François II de PICHON (1647), Chevalier, Seigneur de Carriet, First Baron de Parempuyre, President of the parliament in Bordeaux

On December 12, 1671 he married Benoite d'ALESME. He become the first Baron de Parempuyre. The Barony of Parempuyre was south of Macau.

He married the only child of Jacques d'ALESME. The ALESME family were among the most distinguished in the Medoc area and had many states north of the Bordeaux.


There was no issue from this marriage.

Brother of François II and son of Bernard de PICHON.

Jacques  married on May 27, 1709 Marie du ROY and issued:

1 Joseph de PICHON-PAREMPUYRE
2. Catherine de PICHON-PAREMPUYRE  married  Marc Antoine de RAIGNIAC, Baron de Frespech.

He was buried at the chapel de Caupène (l'église Saint-Pierre) and on his tomb it is written:

"Ci-gist dans sa chapelle, haut et puissant seigneur Jacques de Pichon, Chevalier, Seigneur des maisons nobles de la Motte et Vallier et autres lieux, Suzerain de l'entire terre d'Arsac, Baron de Parrampuyre, Conseiller du Royen la Grand "Chambre du Parlement de Bordeaux, decede le 1er novembre ....marie Dame Marie du Roy, laquelle a fait mettre cette epitaphe pour temoignage de la commune amitie et de son desir d'etre enterree dans le meme tombeau, jusqu'a la resurrection bienheureuse" (From Source, 7).

Jacques-François de PICHON (1649-1731), Seigneur de Longueville and Baron de Longueville

Married Thérèse de RAUZAN on February 9, 1694. Upon his marriage, he inherited the lands of his father-in-law, Pierre des MESURES RAUZANDE in Saint-Lambert.

 At the states of Saint-Lambert, Pierre had started to plant grape vines before his daughter married Jacques-François de PICHON. One of the first wines produced by Pierre de RAUZANDE was   "La sorcier de la vigne" at the state MARGOUX.

Within a couple of years, the state acquired through marriage by Jacques-François de PICHON was producing high quality wine. It was considered second only to Latour.

2) Anne-Marie de PICHON married Joseph de LOUPES, chevalier seigneur de Logent,  Fontbadet, et cetera.

Married after 1747  Marie Barbe Branda de TERREFORT (1736-1777) and issued Joseph de Pichon. 

After the death of her husband, it was Marie de TERREFORT who was in charge of the states of the Longueville until the age of her son Joseph.

Joseph de PICHON married  Marguerite Rosalie Sophie NARBONNE de PELET d'ANGLADE and issued five children:

Raoul Jacques Albert Paulin (1787) de PICHON, Baron de Longueville
In 1819, he married Marie Marthe Armande Félicité Pétronille de RAYMOND de la LANDE and had no issue.

Raoul in 1851 began the construction on the Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville (see below picture)

In 1855, the Longueville state was 80 hectares  dedicated to the production of wine. It produced about 120 tons of grapes. It was divided between the château Baron area and the Lalande area.

At the death of Raoul de PICHON in 1860 the state of Longueville was officially split into two but wine was still produced.

1) Virginie took on the headship of  "Château Pichon-Longueville" which later become known was the  "Château Pichon-Longueville - Comtesse de Lalande" 

2) The adoptive son of Raoul, Marie Alexandre Raoul de Pichon (dit Raoul), took on the headship of "le Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville". In 1864, Raoul bought "le domaine de Briat" in  Armagnac.  

The family conserved the two vineyards until after World War I. Afterwards, economics failures forced the descendant of Raoul, Albert de Pichon Longueville (1865-1938) to sell the "Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville" in 1933 to the Jean BOUTEILLER family. This family sold the state to "le groupe Axa" in 1987. Today, the vineyards still produced wine under the name "Les Tourelles de Longueville" 

Upon the death of the Countess de Lalande in 1882,  the state passed to her  niece Elizabeth de NARBONNE PELET. She was married to the Count Charles de LALANDE. Their children Sophie and Henriette inherited the estate and sold it in 1926 to  Louis and Edouard Miailches.  

 In 1978, ownership passed to May Eliane de Lencquesaing, Edouard Miailhe’s daughter" (Online history of the Chateau). Finally, in 2007 the headship of the vineyard passed on to Louis Roederer.


Today the vineyard comprises 86 hectares: Château Pichon-Longueville and the Comtesse de Lalande. One the finest wines in France is still produced there.

Marie Alexandre Raoul de Pichon (dit Raoul) was the son of Gustave de PICHON and Estelle le GARDEUR de TILLY.

He was adopted by his uncle Raoul Albert, Baron de Pichon-Longueville.

Albert inherited  Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville from his father and later he sold it in 1933 to Jean Bouteiller.

Was the son of Marie Alexandre  Raoul and Nathalie de CHANCEAULME de CLARENS (1846-1907).

He married on April 20, 1896 Gabrielle ESPIVENT de la VILLEBOISNET and issued:

1. Jeanne Marie Bernadette Claire de PICHON-LONGUEVILLE (1898-1983), married on June 14, 1921 to Georges BONTEMPS-DUBARRY-KAPPELHOFF (1898-1877) and issued.

Graduated from the St. Cyr Military Academy and was Chef de Bataillon. He received the Legion of Honor.

He was killed in Somme on May 31, 1918 at the young age of 18. He formed part of the 8èmede chasseurs.

Raoul de PICHON (+1980), The Last Baron Pichon-Longueville

Married on April 26, 1933 Valentine de BOURBON CHALUS (1907-1994) and had no issue.

La Maison de BOURBON CHAULUS

Valentine de BOURBON CHAULUS was the daughter of Gaspard, Count de Châlus (1876-1936) and Marguerite Espivent de la Villesboisnet (1885-1918).

Upon the death of his brother Bearnard in World War I, Raoul become the head of the House of PICHON-LONGUEVILLE.

It appears that with the death of Raoul de PICHON in 1980, the title and dignity of Baron de Longueville become extinct. However, the PICHON bloodline continues on to this day in the many noble families that married the PICHON throughout more than seven hundred years of history (1229-1980)
