La Maison des Verges de Sannois (1440-Present)


 Origins of the Family 


According to the book "The Rose of Martinique", the VERGERS de SANNOIS family originated from Brest, France. The moved to Martinique and were among the oldest families in the island. This noble family owned a large number of plantations in Martinique ( Source 2, 7-9).

Élisabeth MAIGNE du PLAT was the daughter of Guillaume MAIGNE du PLAT (+1690) and Marie d'ORANGE (1641-1680). Marie d'Orange was the third daughter of Guillaume d'Orange (1605-1674) and Madeleine HUGUET (1613-1690).

She was first married to Claude Papin de l'Epine (1627-1667) but become a widow.

La Maison de Bence de Sainte-Catherine

Origins 

According to the "Dictionnaire historique et héraldique de la noblesse française : rédigé dans l'ordre patronymique d'après les archives des anciens parlements" (Volume 2). Paris:1897 by D. de MAILHOL, the BENCE family originated from Italy and come to France during the time Catherine de Medici (1519-1589).

 Their name was originally BENENCASA/BENINCASA and the family originated in Siena, Italy. The family is said to be related to Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) whose original name was Caterina di Giacomo di Benincasa. Therefore, in the mid 17th century, the Martinique branch of the family, adopted the name BENCE de SAINTE-CATHERINE in honor of their saintly relative (Source 1, 697-698).

 Origins 

According to the study conducted by Henri de Frémont, the DeSalles family originates from Bretagne and moved to the French Antilles in the 17th century (Fremont, 5). In Martinique, the family established a veritable dynasty by marrying some of the most prominent families. Moreover, many family members were part of the Sovereign Council of Martinique (Conseil Souverain de Martinique).

In 1781, the DesSalles family were ennobled by the grace of His Most Christian Majesty, Louis XVI of France and Navarre (r. 1774-1792).

Biographical Note:

Pierre-Fracois-Marie-Dieudonné's appointment as Procureur Généeral of Martinique was revoked by Louis-Philippe de Orléans (r. 1830-1848) for refusing to carryout the order to ban Charles X de Bourbon (r. 1824-1830) from entering Martinique and all French colonies (Source 2, 697).

 Pierre-François-Marie-Dieudonné was a staunched defender of the Bourbon Monarchy of France and saw the Orléans branch as usurpers.

He was also the writer of a journal from 1837 to 1841 which was published as La vie d'un colon à la Martinique au XIXème Siècle-Correspondance" by an ancestor of Pierre, Doctor Henri-Martin de Frémont in 1985 and 1988.



Pierre was the owner of the habitation "Nouvelle Cité" in Ste-Marie, Martinique.
 

He married in Fort-de-France on October 16,1808 Marie-Magdeleine-Calixte-Reine-Anna de BENCE de SAINTE-CATHERINE.

She was the daughter of Pierre-Nicolas-François- BENCE de SAINTE-CATHERINE (1764-1843) and Marie-Madeline- Angelique DUVAL de SAINTE CATHERINE (1772-1815), Dame d'Honneur de Mme. Rose-Claire des Vergers de Sannois (1736–1807), mother of the Empress Josephine.

The Bence de Sainte-Catherine family were united in marriage to the Gaigneron Jollimont  family in 1753 with marriage of Nicolas-François Bence de Saint Catherine (1726-1773) and Marie-Rose Gaigneron Jollimont (1731-1784). Both are the parents of Pierre-Nicolas-François- BENCE de SAINTE-CATHERINE.

Biography on Marie-Henriette-Charlotte-Jeanne de POTIER: 

She belonged to an ancient and noble family. Her father was Louis-Nestor de POTIER (1795-1871), General and Commander of the Legion of Honor, and her mother was Aménaide de LASTIC SAINT-JAL (1808-1880).

From the maternal side, Marie-Henriette-Charlotte-Jeanne was descendant from the de LASTIC family. The family is considered to be one of the most ancient in France.
The de Lastic family, for example, are directly related to Isabelle (Isabeau) de MONTLUÇON, Dauphine d'Auvergue (1170-1198) and therefore to the Maison de France (Source 2, 699).
