GRANT de LUXOLIÈRE de BELLUSSIÈRE

Brief History and Genealogy

La Maison de GRANT de LUXOLIÈRE de BELLUSSIÈRE

The GRANT de LUXOLIÈRE de BELLUSSIÈRE family traces their origin not to France but to Scotland. There the family dynasty was established with Fergus the First around 350. Around 1249 the Grand castle was constructed in Invernesshire (source 2).

Grant-strathspey2.jpg
The Arms of the Scottish Grant Family
The Scottish Grant family continues to own the Castle Grant and the current head of the family (clan) is the Right Honorable, Sir James Patrick Trevor Grant of Grant, 6th Barton of Strathspey and 33rd hereditary Clan Chief of the Grant.

During many centuries, the Scottish Grant Clan supported the Scottish independence and directly collaborated with  figures like  William Wallance. However, during the conflict between King Charles I and Parliament, the Grant clan supported the English royalist forces. After the English Civil War, the family become a supporter of William of Orange's claim to the throne of England against the Jacobites (Source 2).

The Grant Family in France

After the conquest of England by the Norman King William the Conqueror (1028-1087), many Scottish families settled in Normandy. The GRAND or GRANT - as it was known in France - received from the King of England many fiefdoms. Already by 1120, the family held the titles of Esquire (écuyer) and Knight (chevalier).

According to the published description of the Grant/Grand family in the "Armorial de la noblesse du Périgord, Volume" (1891) by Alfred de Froidefond de Boulazac, the family was forced to enter commerce in order to recuperate from the losses it suffered during the wars of religion in France. The Grant/Grand family asked for a reinstatement of their nobility to Henry IV of France and Navarre (1553 -1610)

On January 25, 1610 Letters Patent were issued by His Majesty, King Henry IV in favor of François III Grand, écuyer, seigneur de Faveyrol, Bellussiére, and Baron of Luxoliére (Source 4).

Description of Coat of Arms (Blason)

"Le Bulletin héraldique de France: ou, Revue historique de la noblesse ..., Volumes 5-6" (1892) reports that the coat of arms of the Grant or Grad family has

(a blue background and three dragons of gold flying one over the other).

The motto of the family was Serpent unquam (Serpent Never).
